Plumbing maintenance for homeowners: How to Prevent a costly plumbing disaster

There are so many things in our home that we take for granted. Our flooring, our electrical system, and yes, our plumbing system. We tend to ignore plumbing issues until we end up with either a tremendous mess or a monster bill. Of course, a much worse proposition would be both.
There are so many things in our home that we take for granted. Our flooring, our electrical system, and yes, our plumbing system. We tend to ignore plumbing issues until we end up with either a tremendous mess or a monster bill. Of course, a much worse proposition would be both. Fortunately, there are some plumbing red flags that we can look out for. All it takes is a little education. Look out for some of these issues to avoid a potential plumbing disaster:

Know what your emergency shut-off valve is and how to use it.
Your emergency shut-off valve is essentially an “automatic plumber” that will turn off the water if any type of red flag occurs. For example, if the valve detects a sudden drop in water pressure, they will automatically shut off your water supply in case this is a leak.
Considering this is such an important part of your home, you will want to make sure it is properly maintained. We here at Here’s Rescue Plumbers have been dealing with the emergency shut-off valves in California homes for many years now and we can keep them running in top shape!
Keep an eye out for leaks.
You should fully study your home for signs of leaks. Take a look at your water meter, scanning it for any unusual activity. Do the same for your water bill. If the usage seems to be unusually high, it could indicate a leak. You should also check for moisture under sinks, basins, and behind cabinets. Having your home undergo an annual inspection by a professional plumber is a good idea as well. Finally, you should grab some food coloring and add it to the top of your toilet. If it shows up at the bottom of your stool, it means your toilet is leaking. Doing some plumbing preventative maintenance will help you stop a leak from becoming a ruptured pipe later on!
Avoid clogging.
A clog can ruin your entire plumbing system. This is why you need to consider some basic drain maintenance techniques. Doing such things as installing a small plastic or mesh cover to trap hair or other debris before it goes down into the sink, being careful about what food scraps go down your sink, running hot water in the sink at least once a week to clear up deposits in your pipes, and running cold water while you use your garbage disposal are steps you can take to prevent clogs.
Upgrade your hoses and other fixtures.
Simply put, rubber hoses should be replaced with the updated metallic version as soon as possible. All modern residences have these types of plumbing fixtures, and for good reason. They are often much more durable than rubber hoses and can withstand more extreme temperatures.
